In today’s news we have a couple of important announcements. The first is that a new horizontal shooter designed to run on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis has released on Steam, and Capcom has multiple updates for Capcom Fighting Collection 2, including new characters!

In regard to the new shmup, it is called “Earthion,” and has been developed by Ancient with the soundtrack by the legendary game music composer, Yuzo Koshiro! Ancient was the developer for many popular games from the time of the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis including Streets of Rage 2 and Beyond Oasis (Story of Thor).

Considering the pedigree of Ancient and Mr. Koshiro, this shmup has been a highly anticipated release. It came out on Steam just last week, on July 31, 2025. The regular retail price for the Steam version is $19.99. Releases for modern consoles should come out some time in September.

For those who want to watch some reviews, Joe at Game Sack gushed about it in his review, and Sega Lord X spoke it very positively as well. The main thing he was irritated about was that he wasn’t able to play it first on his Sega Genesis. Although, that version should come in 2026. It will be published by Limited Run Games.

Updates to Capcom Fighting Collection 2

For fighting game fans, I’m also glad to announce that Capcom Fighting Collection 2 has some recent updates, the most important to me being the addition of four more characters to Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper! These are,

  • Maki
  • Yun
  • Eagle
  • Ingrid

These are unlocked by choosing additional characters in the EX Settings menu. What I really like about this is that these were characters that were last seen in Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX on the PSP. I’ll be glad to play these characters on the big screen again. Although, I don’t know if the Variable Battle mode of the PSP version was also added to the collection.

One other update for Alpha 3 is the addition of more character art for the new characters as well. If you want to know of changes Capcom has made over the course of the history of Alpha 3 and its multiple releases, please see its page on Wikipedia.

Another change to the same collection is the viewing of combo routes in Plasma Sword when using the training mode. Admittedly, that isn’t too exciting, but I am glad it is there!

Finally, the collection also has at least two new remixed music tracks for the music player in the game. One of which is for Esaka, which is a famous series of tracks for Kyo Kusanagi in King of Fighters. Oh and one other note, the update to Capcom Fighting Collection 2 also includes new art added to the gallery as well.

For those who want to see the trailer showing these updates, please click here. Also, during the preparation for this post I found a recent video from a Japanese person explaining all the special intros in CVS 2. I liked how she explained what was going on so here is a link to it.

Hot off the Press

Last night I found a new trailer showing the training stage from New Virtua Fighter Project had just dropped! It shows fighting gameplay from the title still in development and is able to be seen at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfG8XdOwPK8. It shows Akira and Sarah Bryant. More details on the game will be available at TGS 2025. I also found Maximilian Dood’s non-reaction to the video, too!

While this isn’t a new game, I did like this anime trailer for Ken’s inclusion in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves as well. I thought some of you might like it.
