There’s a number of people who’d like to make their own RPG but are unsure where to start. For them, I suggest the RPG Maker Beyond Expectations Bundle to help budding game designers get started for just $25!
It’s still available for 12 more days and comes with 18 different items, including 3 versions of RPG maker and Pixel Game Maker MV. When examining the full list of contents, we find,
- RPG Maker MV
- RPG Maker MV – Sakan
- RPG Maker MV – Mado
- RPG Maker MV – Gene
- RPG Maker VX Ace
- RPG Maker Unite (Epic Games Store Key!)
- Default Character Facial Expressions Assets1
- Default Character Facial Expressions Assets2
- Default Character Facial Expressions Assets3
- RPG Maker Unite Add-on – 3D Dungeon
- Single-picture Map Collection of Materials 1 Ancient City Ezil
- Single-picture Map Collection of Materials 2 Samurai Town Hinomoto
- Single-picture Map Collection of Materials 3 Southern Sea Solitary Island Goba
- Single-picture Map Collection of Materials 4 Frontline Defense Base Orad
- Pixel Game Maker MV
- Pixel Game Maker MV – Weapon assets (100 varieties) and Dot Robot Set
- Pixel Game Maker MV – 2D Side-scrolling Shooting Game Sample Project
- Pixel Game Maker MV – Card Game Sample
From the above, we see that the bundle contains three different RPG makers: RPG Maker VX Ace, RPG Maker MV and RPG Maker Unite. These are listed in order of oldest to newest, with the last being built on top of the Unity Engine and runs natively in 1080p. It is also only on the Epic Games Store for this bundle.
However, of the options here, many would rather use VX Ace or MV. Even though they are much older, they are also easier to use and have much stronger user bases. That means it will be less difficult to find tutorials on how to do complex scenes and to find games made with those engines.
On the other hand, it’s helpful to remember that even after someone decides to use one of the RPG Maker engines over the others, it doesn’t mean the latter are worthless. Far from it! The reason being that assets from one RPG Maker engine can be legally be used in a different RPG Maker game if you own both of them. That means assets from Unite or VX Ace could (hypothetically) be used in a game being developed with MV.
For myself, I’m actually quite interested in the Pixel Game Maker MV. I enjoy a lot of side-scrolling action-adventure titles so it looks right up my alley. It must be my NES roots coming through!
In regards to value, if one bought Pixel Game Maker MV and RPG Maker MV during this current Steam sale (as of 03/19/2025), the total price would be just a bit over $25! Yet with this bundle, purchasers receive both of those games, some DLC for each, and two more RPG Maker titles! That’s a real good deal!
So, what do you think? Does this make trying to develop a game a little less threatening? Let me know below, and thanks for reading!
