Uchusen Ultimate Ploid Battle Review – Can a Game Developed in One Day Be Any Good?

Uchusen: Ultimate Ploid Battle Review – a Game Developed in One Day?

Uchusen: Ultimate Ploid Battle is one of those games where the first thing you hear about it is just how terrible it is. Nonetheless, I still wanted to try it out. Is it as bad as people say?

In a couple words, yeah it is, but there is more to it than that. It’s a horizontal scrolling shooter where you collect uchusen for points, attack a few enemies with your weak spaceship, and face a boss at the end of the stage. After doing so, you may get a congratulations screen, or you may pass through the wall at the end, and then the game just repeats. Although there is some slight variation at times, it changes very little. I didn’t even notice any powerups to speak of.

Uchusen Ultimate Ploid Battle - A slight variation on facing the boss
Uchusen Ultimate Ploid Battle – I was honestly shocked when I saw the three blocks in front of the boss.

The music is the same throughout the game. But like Distant Space, I felt that this was the best part.

The worst aspect is the terrible control. Your ship has inertia so it very floaty and it is easy to crash into objects because the delay in response to pressing the D pad is really bad.

Uchusen Ultimate Ploid Battle - Crashing into objects is not surprising due to bad controls
Uchusen Ultimate Ploid Battle – Ah yes, I crashed into an object again! I need to git gud!

So, why do I have any respect for this game at all, and almost like it?

The reason is that it was made in one day, and you know what, that is kind of impressive! The graphics are nothing fancy, and again, the control is quite bad, but I did like the music some. Also, Infinite Mode allows you to go up and down on the screen which is mildly interesting. Admittedly though, the stuff on each screen is practically identical.

Uchusen Ultimate Ploid Battle - A couple of enemies
Uchusen Ultimate Ploid Battle – A couple of enemies flying by casually. They tend to be in this formation.

I think many people will consider this a bad game, or maybe even awful. Yet, I feel compelled to rate it a little more due to the time constraints related to its creation. Most people will probably play it once, hate it, and never play it again. Even so, I still respect it and wish its developer well. As such, I am rating it as a poor game.

Uchusen Ultimate Ploid Battle OK, getting some Uchusen points
Uchusen Ultimate Ploid Battle – OK, thanks for the encouragement, little game.
